About Gucci
Gucci's colorful history begins in 1921, with family patriarch Guccio Gucci selling leather travel bags out of his shop in Florence. An excellent craftsman with a taste for European cosmopolitan style, Gucci went on to create compelling designs with luxury appeal, such as the now iconic bamboo-handled "Jackie O" handbag. After Guccio Gucci's death in 1953, the company, then run by his sons, continued to flourish, opening stores in Tokyo, Paris, London, Beverly Hills, and Palm Beach. Helped along by the interest of Hollywood celebrities like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly, the Gucci name became synonymous with high fashion.
Turbulent times followed, with feuding among fiery-tempered family members nearly leading the company to bankruptcy by the early 1990s; however, new leadership, along with daring new designs by American designer Tom Ford, turned the company around. By the mid 1990s, Gucci products were once again all over Hollywood, this time being touted by the likes of Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Sarah Jessica Parker, and the Gucci name had reasserted itself as a sought-after symbol of modern chic.
Today Gucci produces a varied line of beautifully designed luxury products, including jewelry, perfume, leather fashions, luggage, shoes, and watches. Gucci watches combine the elegance of Italian design with the exacting standards of Swiss craftsmanship. The results are exceptionally well-made precision timepieces with modern, sophisticated lines and celebrated Gucci style.
